evolved from the use of scrolls, to flat folded sheets sewn and protected
between boards, then wrapped in leather.

TWO 84-PAGE OPEN-BACK
--MEDIEVAL-STYLE HARDCOVER BOOKS--
THE
BOOK-OF-AGES KIT
Unlike the restrictive nature of the traditional
book structure with its
rigid wrap-around binding, the medieval style open-back book allows
you to add a creative flair both inside and out.
Using the tools and techniques developed by PP-Press, you will learn
to make two 84-page hardcover open-back handsewn signature-style
blank books, attaching boards and papers in a weave of waxed Irish
linen thread.

Along with a ruler, scissors, and a bonefolder,
you will also want to use some bricks. Yes,
bricks.
*BRICKS*
*BRICKS* *BRICKS*
In order to help stabilize the construction process,
it is suggested that you use two standard household masonry bricks.
Make sure the bricks are dry. Not just plucked out of the garden.
(Moisture and paper do not work well together). You can purchase them
at a lumber-supply store.
Wrap
and tape the bricks as you would a gift. Then you're set to go. They
also make good bookends.
